Dear Mr. VP,
Oh no you people didn’t. Oh NO you did NOT.
“Can we really to ask….a single mom to pay for these programs?” said White House budget director Mick Mulvaney.
YES. YES YOU CAN. AND I WILL GLADLY DO SO.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting receives less than 500 million dollars a year from the federal government. There are about 243 million adults in the United States. About 122 million adults pay federal income tax. Yes, I will pay $2-$4 a year to support public broadcasting and the arts.
Actually, I would much rather pay that than pay into our bloated military budget, which stood at almost $600 billion in 2015, or approximately $5000 per taxpayer.
Let me tell you something. I’m a single mom who happily pays taxes because I want to live in a society with a social safety net, one where we provide health care to all, support education, fund scientific research, and prize the arts.
AND let’s talk about how many times Sesame Street has gotten me through the day. Elmo is the reason my kid brushes his teeth. Back when I stayed home, if I just needed some time to take a breath, I felt ok about putting on a Sesame Street episode because hey, maybe he’d learn a letter or two (and he knew all his letters by 18 months, thankyouverymuch). If I’m in a bad mood, Ricky Gervais and Elmo make me laugh every time. Grover as the Old Spice guy? Yes, please. There aren’t many kids shows that make me happy rather than leave me wanting to poke my eyes out. Please, don’t make it worse.
