Walk Out: May 22, 2017

Dear Mr. VP,

I am writing to you from the top of a mountain.

No, I’m not kidding.

It’s my lunch break and I needed some air, so I made like a bunny and bounded up some trails.

I saw your speech at Notre Dame yesterday. What a way to be welcomed back to Indiana, huh? A hundred graduates walked out.

I’ve seen people arguing since then — people I consider progressive — that we shouldn’t walk out on speakers we disagree with. We need to stay and listen and open a dialogue.

Sorry, but I’m not there. Yes, you can speak, but I don’t have to listen. You question my civil rights as a woman, and you’re a spokesperson for a group that wants to strip healthcare from sick children, keep people of color from voting, deport people and break up their families. You support conversion therapy, which means you support abuse of LGBT people. You’re a racist and you’re part of a racist administration. A racist administration that has obstructed justice and potentially committed treason.

So, no thanks. I don’t feel the need to sit and listen.

But, I do need to walk down a mountain. Until tomorrow, sir.
