Dear Mr. VP,
At this point, I’ve started and erased about sixteen posts about Puerto Rico. I tried to be coherent last night before bed. I wrote one at the children’s museum. I tried while I made dinner. Nothing has stuck.
My kid is Puerto Rican. Someday, he’s going to learn that while Puerto Rican people suffered and died, his president took to the internet to criticize a woman I last saw crying in a video as she lamented that recovery teams weren’t going to be able to reach everyone BEFORE THEY DIED. As a white person, my white privilege prevents me from truly understanding how dehumanized that will make him feel. As his mom, I am raging at that thought.
