Dear Mr. VP,
TEN WHOLE SIGNATURES. We’re comin’ for ya.
Here’s the text of the petition linked above.
If there’s one thing Mike Pence hates, it’s an autocrat who tramples on the free speech of his citizens.
How do I know that? Because Mike Pence hates Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea. Can you blame him? In North Korea, you can be killed for disagreeing with the country’s leader.
Next week, Pence will be at the PyeongChang Olympics with a message: “The Vice President will remind the world that everything the North Koreans do at the Olympics is a charade to cover up the fact that they are the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet,” said an aide to the VP.
Words are effective, but remember last April when Pence visited the DMZ separating North and South Korea? Who could forget his determined stare, menacing Kim Jong-un across the militarized border? This is Pence at his most effective.
Meanwhile, on February 5th, in a speech in Ohio, Donald Trump accused Congressional Democrats of treason because of their reactions to his State of the Union address: “And you have the other side even on positive news, really positive news like that, they were like death and un-American. Un-American. Somebody said treasonous. I mean, yeah, I guess, why not. Can we call that treason? Why not. I mean they certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much.”
In the United States, treason (defined by the Constitution as making war against the U.S., aiding its enemies, or giving enemies “aid and comfort”) is a crime punishable by death.
Donald Trump is arguing that refusal to clap or show support during his State of the Union — in other words, visibly displaying disagreement with the country’s leader — is treason, a crime punishable by death.
Sound familiar? Maybe because that’s what happens to political dissenters in North Korea.
Mike Pence, we need you to fight against this dangerous and autocratic rhetoric from your boss. We need you to do what you do best. And that’s why we’re asking you to don your name-emblazoned jacket, stand outside the White House gates, and stare determinedly in the direction of the Oval Office until Donald Trump rescinds his comments asserting that disagreement by Congressional Democrats is tantamount to treason.
We need you, Mr. Vice President. Give Trump your best Care Bear Stare and save our republic.
