Dear Mr. VP,
I don’t know if I can tell you how excited I am that you’re involved in a public feud with a figure skater. Adam Rippon reportedly turned down a meeting with you.
And, as I’ve said before, who can blame him? You’ve voted against rights and protections for LGBT folks over and over again. Against equal marriage. Against making it illegal to discriminate against queer people. You supported Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (and called allowing openly gay people in the military “social experimentation.”) You pushed Indiana’s religious freedom legislation so hard you wouldn’t have won re-election in Indiana. Maybe most disgustingly, you’ve supported conversion therapy — in other words if it were up to you, gay man Adam Rippon wouldn’t exist. He’d have been electro-shocked outta his gay.
GLAAD has compiled an extensive list of your anti-LGBT stances here.
Rippon summed it up by saying, “Mike Pence doesn’t stand for anything that I really believe in.” Me either, Adam. Me either.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t publicly pat someone on the back and support their athletic endeavors while you use your political platform to make the world a more unsafe place for them. That’s not how any of this works.
In sum, Team Adam. There’s no reason he has to share air with a homophobe.
