Dear Mr. VP,
But let’s pretend for a second that Jeff Sessions is not a racist. We’re ignoring a lot of evidence here, and that’s hard to do, but let’s pretend.
In this magical unicornaverse where Jeff Sessions is not racist, he’s still aware that he works in an administration that’s viewed as racist (you know, because it is). So it would behoove him to not say things that could be considered racist. Like, just stay away from saying things about, say, the “Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement” because gee, that sure sounds sorta…racist. If Sessions really meant to reference the British roots of the office of sheriff, perhaps he should have phrased that differently.
But he didn’t, so I’m left with these two choices: either Jeff Sessions is a complete idiot who doesn’t understand how his words might be a dog whistle to white supremacists, or he’s a white supremacist. I don’t really feel all that comfortable with either option, given the man is the top law enforcement officer in the country.
