Dear Mr. VP,
We are failing our kids.
That’s an exchange between two brothers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, as the shooter was active. One of the brothers tweeted it.
“Just know I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Is your heart aching? Mine is.
Today I was walking across campus and thought, the flag looks bigger.
I realized it’s because it’s flying at half mast. More dead kids. More teachers taking bullets to save their students. More parents left without their babies.
I’m not going to rehash all the statistics that show gun control works. It does. We know this.
You don’t think smoking kills people though, so I’m not particularly surprised at your willingness to overlook statistics and logic, particularly when it results in a check from the NRA addressed to you.
I’m sending my child to kindergarten next year. I wish I could believe I’m sending him out into a world where kindergarteners don’t get slaughtered in their classroom. Unfortunately, that belief was smashed to bits in an elementary school in Sandy Hook. I was just a month pregnant.
Our kids are begging for you to act, to pass common sense gun laws, to keep them safe. And you, who claims to be pro-life, will do nothing. Worse than nothing. You will continue to give keynote speeches at NRA conventions and accept their campaign donations and brag about how you won’t pass gun control laws while our kids die in their libraries, and their cafeterias, and their science labs, and their homerooms. Their blood is on your hands. I have no doubt: future generations will judge you harshly.
