Dear Mr. VP,
How are you celebrating today?
It’s RBG’s 85th birthday!
(I have this feeling you aren’t celebrating.)
Justice Ginsburg is a particular inspiration to me. She had two kids while she tackled Harvard Law — a place where she was one of eight women in a class of 500. Some days I feel like my kid prevents me from tackling my laundry, never mind the workload of law school paired with the micro- (and macro-) aggressions faced in a hostile and male-dominated environment. She is an incredible role model for women struggling to juggle the multiple demands placed on us by a patriarchal society.
And her relationship is inspirational too. Speaking about her late husband, she said he was, “The only young man I dated who cared that I had a brain.” By all accounts her marriage was an egalitarian one — and one I hope to someday look to as a model if I get married again.
I’m sure you view RBG simply as a roadblock on your journey to sending Roe v. Wade to history’s ash heap. “I think the side that wants to take the choice away from women and give it to the state, they’re fighting a losing battle. Time is on the side of change,” she said in 2009. She knows we’re not going backwards, no matter how hard you try to push us there. And she’s not retiring anytime soon.
So, if you see her today — maybe you won’t say Happy Birthday, but please tell her I did.
