Dear Mr. VP,
Oh, John Bolton. It was only a matter of time before y’all got over his mustache and brought him on board. He’s just your type of guy.
This is a man who has written books like “How Barack Obama is Endangering our National Sovereignty: How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to Bad Science, Pandering Politicians and Misguided Policies” and “Surrender is Not an Option: Defending America at the United Nations” — as if our biggest concern in the world is the organization founded after World War II to prevent future world wars. How very Glenn Beck of him.
(Aside: when you search John Bolton on Amazon, the suggested books “inspired by your recent browsing history” become things like “How Obama Embraces Islam’s Sharia Agenda” and “Confessions of an Islamophobe” which tells me all I need to know about people who are actually purchasing and reading Bolton’s writings.)
This is a man who was too controversial to be appointed as ambassador to the UN through Congressional channels, and had to be granted a recess appointment after a Democratic filibuster.
Here’s what’s most concerning to me:
John Bolton, who is reportedly in line to be President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for deputy secretary of state, suggested Sunday that the CIA’s conclusion that Russia intervened to help Trump in the 2016 election could be a “false flag,” possibly implicating the Obama administration. (Washington Post)
In other words, Bolton — who is supposed to be, above all, dedicated to American sovereignty — will do nothing address the very real threat to our sovereignty and free elections currently being leveled by Vladimir Putin and Russia. And, Bolton is a conspiracy theorist, tied right up with the far-right Alex Joneses of the world, as evidenced by his promotion of the idea of a false flag.
Bolton is also hawkish on North Korea, something that I’m not particularly excited about given we all have nukes pointed at each other.
Here’s where I’m left. I’m left with David Rothkopf, who published an opinion piece on CNN last night and said the following:
Few prominent national security figures are as ill-suited to the job of national security adviser as Bolton when you consider his views, his temperament and his ability be an honest broker. In fact, he is actually one of the few people on earth who would be worse than Mike Flynn, who was the worst national security adviser of all time. (CNN)
