Dear Mr. VP,
One of my favorite books is The Handmaid’s Tale. I’ve read it multiple times, and I watched the first season of the show. I’ve found it impossible to start the second season because I honestly don’t know if I can deal with a dystopian television show at the same moment I feel like I’m living in a dystopia.
At the beginning of the story, the main character tries to illegally cross a border. She is caught and detained. She is separated from her young child. Her child is lost to her, sent to live with another family, probably a family unable to have biological children. Essentially, the child is trafficked.
This was a nearly impossible scene for me to watch. My own child asleep in the next room over, all I could think about was the empty I would feel if he was ripped from me. “It’s fiction,” I thought to myself. “This is fiction.”
But it isn’t fiction, is it? Well, for me it is — a white American mom with a kid who yes, is partly Latinx, but also passes as white. I will most likely never cross a border illegally, most likely (and very thankfully) never endure a moment in which my child is ripped away from me.
For parents crossing our southern border, this isn’t the case. We’re trusting a government recently revealed to have LOST 1475 children to care for them after we rip them from their parents. (And not just lost — indeed, it’s also been revealed some of these children were released to sex traffickers.)
I almost cannot bear to read this. I am lying next to my sleeping son in a bed and I cannot be close enough to him.
Babies as young as a year are being taken from their parents.
“But these people are criminals,” say your supporters.
I don’t buy that line. But even if I did, last I checked, no crime is punishable by having your child sold to a sex trafficker.
Children being ripped from parents, our president saying they aren’t innocent. For real. He said unaccompanied minors “look so innocent. They’re not so innocent.”
I’m sorry, but isn’t the whole pro-life message about how innocent kids are? How we need to protect innocent babies?
Clearly, pro-life is a misnomer. Your administration is pro-white-life.
