Dear Mr. VP,
Today’s hero: Christian Bales, the valedictorian at a Catholic high school in Kentucky who was barred from giving his graduation speech. The diocese said his speech was “too political.” Bales, who is gay and gender non-conforming, believes his identity to be the real reason he wasn’t allowed to speak. After wearing a floral jumpsuit and heels to the prom, the school contacted his mom to ask her to be sure he was in “appropriate male dress” for graduation. Apparently appropriate male dress means pants, no make-up, and no hair accessories. I didn’t really know hair accessories were specifically for women, but I’ll keep that in mind for the future.
Anyway, undeterred, Bales gave his speech anyway. On the lawn after graduation. With a bullhorn.
